The town is home to approximately 1,800 residents, including Joe Pesci, who lives in a cream-colored bay house on Pershing Boulevard. Its name comes from a shipwreck that took place in the waters of the Bay in March 1817. A young woman was saved by an ax-wielding captain.

Before 1872, Ship Bottom was a largely undeveloped area. In 1872, the U.S. Life Saving Station #20 was founded here. In the decades that followed, the town grew around the station, which was named after the area's founder. In 1886, the Manahawkin and Long Beach Railroad built a trestle here. By the 1950s, the town grew rapidly, and now has a year-round population of around 1,150 residents. It also boasts the Route 72 causeway, which connects greater New Jersey with the city of Long Beach Boulevard.

As the gateway to Long Beach Island, the town of Ship Bottom offers an array of activities for both tourists and locals. A public boat ramp on 11th Street, located along the Bay, hosts evening concerts throughout the summer. In December, the town hosts the LBI Christmas Parade.
