A Brief Description of Key-Biscayne Beach in Florida

This article is a brief description of Key-Biscayne Beach, a barrier island in South Florida. It is actually not part of the Florida Keys, but rather a barrier island comprised of eroded sand from the Appalachian Mountains that is carried to this area by cotier currents. As a result, the beach is particularly pristine. If you’re looking for a beach with a natural environment, Key-Biscayne may be for you.

The island’s main coastline is a three-mile stretch of soft sand that faces the Atlantic Ocean. Key Biscayne Beach is the closest beach to town, while the other two are flanked by large parks. At the far southern end of the key is Cape Florida Beach, a great place to swim and enjoy the sun. A visit to Key-Biscayne is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami.

The beach’s soft sands and wide seascape make it an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts. Kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing are just some of the activities available at this destination. Nearby Crandon Park is another option for outdoor activities, and there are smaller parks within the park that offer kiteboarding and kayak rentals. The beach is also accessible by bicycle.

There are a number of shopping centers and office buildings within the city limits. The island is also home to a public library and one of the premier private schools in South Florida. It is not surprising that the city’s history is so rich – August 1 is declared the official historic Virginia Key Day. Besides the beaches, Key Biscayne is also home to the Miami Seaquarium, which features an array of exotic animals and aquatic activities.

Large-scale development began in the area after 1947. Construction of the Rickenbacker Causeway, a four-mile long bridge, paved the way for residential development. In addition to this, the Matheson family, who owned the largest coconut plantation in the continental US, donated 800 acres to the county as the Crandon Park. The Matheson family promised to build the causeway in exchange for their land.

The city of Key Biscayne is bike-friendly and has 1.5 miles of bike trails. A bike path winds through the park and stretches along the beach. Cycling and hiking enthusiasts can try their hand at kayaking or a sport like kiteboarding. Those with experience in water sports can rent water sports equipment in nearby Crandon Park. A bike rental service can also be helpful. Another attraction is Miami Kiteboarding.

The island is a 1,000-acre barrier island that contains a variety of plant communities. North of Key Biscayne, the island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Biscayne Bay to the west. Because of this barrier island, this area of Miami receives a very low amount of ocean surf energy. The sandbar between Key Biscayne and Virginia Key acts as a natural wave brake.

The southern end of Key Biscayne is home to the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. This park is home to several hiking trails and an historic lighthouse built in the year 1825. The lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Greater Miami. The lighthouse is located on 1200 Crandon Park beach. The lighthouse has been restored several times since then, but is still an iconic landmark.

The island is also home to the Bear Cut Nature Preserve, a preserved patch of land on which you can hike and bike. Nearby is the fossil reef. The fossils were left behind by hurricanes and storms, and it was this region of the island that was used by shady entrepreneurs to avoid local laws. The nature preserve is a wonderful place to visit if you love the outdoors and being in the open.
