Fort Pierce is an historic city on the Treasure Coast. Before World War II, the area was a Spanish colony named for a U.S. Army officer. Lt. Col. Benjamin Pierce, the commander of the 1st Regiment, had the idea to use the fort as a major supply base for the Second Seminole War. However, he had to abandon the fort in 1842, and it burned down the next year. The town’s name comes from Spanish explorers who first arrived here in 1565.

The city is also home to several museums, parks, and botanical gardens. A couple of local women bought five acres of land to build the Heathcote Botanical Gardens. They later used the property to house a bonsai gallery and rainforest display. The museum features more than a hundred different types of plants and trees.
